Our History

1977
1977

Broughton & Broughton was founded by Max Broughton and based in Bayswater, WA

1981
1981

The company had significant growth with a focus on providing asset valuations and service to the mining and resource sector. During this period Max Broughton bought Darren Smith on board as a trainee valuer.

1991
1991

Darren Smith left the company and founded DW Smith & Sons Auctioneers & Valuers based in Midland, a smaller niche business with a clear focus on the mining & resource sectors. Both companies continued to grow and prosper.

Darren & Max agreed to again join forces and amalgamate the two companies to become Smith Broughton Auctioneers operating from their Midland facility.

Our Port Hedland Branch Opened. This expansion is a significant milestone, marking our commitment to extending our reach and services to better serve our clients in the Pilbara region and beyond.

In October 2025, Ritchie Bros. acquisition unites the local WA brand with a global auction powerhouse. The partnership offers sellers the best of both worlds—trusted local service backed by a digital marketplace connecting West Australian assets to buyers internationally. We also expand our yards to include Muchea WA.
